Casey and Stella

Stella- Good morning everybody, welcome back to the daily news from channel 16, the date is April 17th and it is currently 9:00 am.

Casey- It certainly is a good morning, the sun is shining and the temperature is heating up.

Stella- We just heard from Todd about the weather, it sounds like this week is going to be nice all week.

Casey- That’s always good to hear, that means summer is on the way.

Stella- Yes, I’ll for sure have to break out the barbeque tonight for dinner

Stella- Hey Casey did you hear about the issue striking the US surrounding major choice?

Casey- No what is it about?

Stella- Many students across the United States are struggling to declare their majors when they go to college. More and more students are committing to schools under an undeclared major.

Casey- That’s fascinating stella, we will pass it to Kassidy who is in the field at the University of New England where she will interview a few students about their major and discuss this breaking news.

Kassidy interview

  • Interviewer

Thanks, Stella, I am here at the University of New England, with the students heading into the last few weeks of classes. The University of New England offers 40+ majors and minors here to students who attend. Now that choosing a major has seemed to become a rising issue, I am going to see if I can get some insight today by asking students their true opinions on their majors. Let’s hear what they have to say.

  • INTERVIEW 1:
    • Q: What is your major?
    • A: I am an animal behavior major.
    • Q: What do you think is a top misconception about your major
    • A: People think that this major is very easy, or that we are taking the pre-vet track when there are different routes this major can lead to.
    • Q: Why do you think your major is better than other majors?
    • A: I think it is better because I consider it to be a fun major, you get to work with animals and learn about how they interact and thrive in their environments.
    • Q: If you could choose a different major, what would you choose and why?
    • A: I don’t think I would choose another major if allowed to do so. I think that this major keeps me engaged and I continuously learn something new and interesting every day.
  • Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions concerning majors and giving insight on your major, Stella, and Casey back to you. (add more into the ending and transition back into the studio)

(Maybe talk about my major a little either after that interview or toward the end of the second one)

Casey and Stella

Stella- Thank you, Kassidy, for that it is really interesting to hear about the animal behavior major from a student perspective. It feels like years ago I was in their shoes.

Stella- Speaking of majors, Casey what did you attend college for?

Casey- My major in college was Communications with a focus on media arts.

Stella- That is interesting, how did you choose your major?

Casey- I went in undecided, but after taking a video field production course I fell in love with filmmaking and decided that’s what I wanted to study.

Stella- Oh I see, I never knew that about you. What does that major entail course and credit-wise?

Casey-  its a 42-46 credit course that teaches you how to hone in on your professional and personal communication skills such as storytelling or crafting a message, while developing marketable skills in digital media

Stella- Wow that is so interesting. What careers could you have pursued with that major? Ya know other than an amazing job working for Channel 16.

Casey-  You can have a wide range of jobs such as television and radio, film and video, digital media, journalism, writing and publishing, PR and marketing. Personally, I want to be a filmmaker or work on movie sets.

Stella- Thats so cool. Speaking of communicating, we are going to communicate with Kassidy, who is still in the field at the University of New England.

  • INTERVIEW 2:
  • Kassidy add another intro or transition
    • Waiting on response
  • Interview Questions:
    • What do you think you think is the top misconception about your major
    • Why do you think your major is better than other majors
    • Ask them what major they are and if they could choose a different major what would it be

Casey and Stella

Casey- Thank you Kassidy for the insight.

Casey- Speaking of majors, Stella, what was your major when you attended college?

Stella- I was an Animal Behavior major on the pre-veterinary track

Casey- That sounds very interesting, can you elaborate on the Animal Behavior major?

Stella- Yeah the Animal Behavior major focused on the cognitive processes behind animals’ behavior. In simpler terms, why do animals act the way they do

Casey- Wow who knew that was a major,  what does that major entail?

Stella- This major entails 42- 46 credits, most of which are psychology and science classes. Since I chose to pursue the pre-vet track, I had to take more courses like chemistry and biology.

Casey- That sounds difficult but surely manageable, how did you choose your major?

Stella– Growing up I always wanted to be a veterinarian. I found a passion for working in animal hospitals so going into college, I knew immediately what my major would be. Who knew I would end up working for a news show?

Casey- Choosing majors can be difficult for sure, and we are so happy that you chose to work here at Channel 16. Anyways, was there any additional schooling you could partake in for post-graduate studies?

Stella- Yes, I attended a veterinary school and obtained my doctorate in veterinary medicine. It consisted of 4 more years of schooling and a lot more debt.

Casey- I am sure post-grad schooling can add up money-wise, hopefully, Channel 16 news pays you well.

Stella- I wish I knew I would end up here and I would have skipped the post-grad route

Casey- Certainly, time seems to be running out for today.

Stella- Yes! Wow, what a morning, it was intriguing to hear about the issue surrounding majors. I am going to go enjoy this nice weather!

Casey- I probably will as well, maybe I will take my dog for a walk, thank you for choosing to spend your morning here with us at Channel 16, See you guys next week!
