Draft 1

Hartford Hangs on Against UNE

Following a 9-0 beatdown victory against Thomas College, UNE’s Women’s Soccer squad came out shooting in the first half. However, Hartford held down the net, leading to an intense game that was won late in the second half.

UNE looked to finally get the best of rival Hartford for the first time. With a win tying them for the CNE lead after being one spot away from claiming the conference championship 2024. Unfortunately, they would come up short in a 2-1 loss, falling to a conference record of 2-1-1.

UNE (8-2-2) has been no stranger to putting the ball in the net. Firing 20 shots at Senior goalkeeper Sejal Johnson, who would deny all but one shot, not conceding a goal until the 71st minute to first-year midfielder Gillian Mcgee, which would tie the game 1-1.

Mcgee has now scored in three of the last five games for the Noreasters, with a tally of four goals on the season. The first year was also responsible for seven shots and four shots on goal, showing a valiant effort to get the ball in Hartford’s net

The effort by UNE’s offense as a whole, wouldn’t be enough to match two goals by Hartford first-year midfielder/forward Anastasia Nerny. Her second goal coming in the 83rd minute would put the Hawks up 2-1, which would end up being the nail in the coffin for UNE.

This matchup was seemingly ran by first-year players on both sides of the pitch, with all three goals coming from freshman players.

Although UNE had control over Hartford in shots, 20-11, and shots on goal, 7-5. The offense struggled in other ways, which led to the loss, according to Junior forward Ashley Clark; “Not moving the ball efficiently enough, then not being selective enough with our shots led to just not good enough shots to win”.

Still in the hunt for the CNE title, UNE falls only one game behind leaders Rodger Williams and Johnson & Wales University. With a conference record of 2-1-1.

Having never beaten Hartford in their previous two matchups, UNE head Coach AJ Stuek reflected on their third straight loss to the Hawks; Hartford has always played us tough and they are a tough conference opponent…we are looking forward to our next opportunity to improve our conference record.”

UNE’s next matchup is away against fellow CNE rival Endicott

Reflection

I enjoyed writing my first ever gamer and I believe it helped me take steps forward writing in a reporting style. There are decisions I am happy with and some things I wish I did differently. Nevertheless, the workshop was very helpful for improving my final draft. Something I wish I could change would be getting quotes from the freshmen players after the game. If I did this, I would have enough backbone to make the angle and headline of my story about how every score came from a freshman. This would have been a more unique angle to take in my opinion. I am happy with my paragraph lengths and how I structured the report. I believe it flowed well and the information about the game came through well. I am also happy with the quote I got from coach Stuek. It summed up my report well as it flowed into my introduction of their next matchup against Endicott.
