PITCH
Mat Romano- Mat is an athletic trainer for UNE sports and its his first year at the school. From what I have seen, he already fits in with the staff and players very well, forming great relationships, and putting forward thoughtful care for athletes. He is someone I would like to know more about, especially how he feels being in his first year at UNE.
Trevor Therrien- Coach Trevor Therrien has been with the UNE football program as a player or coach since the start of the program 7 years ago. It would be cool to get his perspective on how the UNE football program has grown over the years and highlight his impact on the program.
Alex Yeaton- Alex is my roommate and teammate on the football team. He is in the midst of a breakout season, getting his first varsity action and playing very well. I could highlight his preparation for the season and what he contributes to his early success in his first few starts of his career.
STATUS REPORT, Friday, 10/31
My Subject, Trevor Therrien, 26, is a UNE Football Coach who has been a part of the program in one way or another since its inception in 2017. The Class of 21′ UNE graduate has worked his way up to the role of being the team’s tight ends Coach. Back in 2017, he was a player for the UNE Football team and earned his way onto the field by being a long snapper. I plan on taking an angle on this story that paints Therrien as an underdog, who has worked hard and stuck through hard times, all for the love of football and helping the UNE program. I plan on going to Therrien’s office on Tuesday, 11/4 at 10 am. I also plan on talking to Coach Tim Viall, UNE’s offensive coordinator, to get some quotes about Therrien’s impact on the program throughout the years. As well as talking to a senior tight end on the team that Therrien has coached for 3 years, Jon Terry.
Casey Jordan 1st draft/Outline
From the University of New England Football program taking its first steps in 2017, to establishing itself as a Conference of New England powerhouse. Players and coaches have come and gone. One of the few people who can say they have been there since before the stadium and locker rooms were built is Coach Trevor Therrien.
Therrien started with the team as one of its first players, earning time on the field as a long snapper. However, a back injury would unfortunately cut his playing time short.
QUOTE-about injury
Therrien didn’t let this obstacle keep him from contributing to the program. He decided to be volunteer his time to help the team in any way.
QUOTE-decision to volunteer
Therrien was present for the team first-ever win against Curry College. knowing he could contribute to a major program first was a special moment for Therrien.

Therrien decided football was something he had to be a part of for the rest of his life. He soon became the team’s defensive line coach for the 2020 season.
QUOTE- role of coaching
Currently, Therrien is in his third year as the tight ends Coach for the UNE football team, with a program record of 7 wins on the season so far.

Trevor Therrien Profile

One of the few people who can say they have been there since before the stadium and locker rooms were built, is Coach Trevor Therrien.
Therrien’s first experience with the team was as a Freshman in 2017 for their first season as a sub-varsity program. Followed by their first varsity season in 2018, where Therrien would earn time on the field as a long snapper.
“That first year was kind of like the wild west” said Therrien. “A lot of guys had to figure out what it meant to be a college football player…we had lots of freshmen and sophomores as a new team without any senior leaders”.
Therrien was present for the team first-ever win against Curry College. Knowing he helped contribute to a major program first is something Therrien holds close.
“We won on a last-second field goal and then all ran out to the field and partied…Being in the locker room after that win was awesome, guys were blasting music and dancing”.
Unfortunately, a back injury that would eventually lead to surgery would cut Therrien’s playing time short.
“It was tough to be on the sideline, when I see guys putting in their full effort, it makes me want to give my full effort too. I realized I had to do whatever I can to get on the field again” said Therrien. “I spent every waking moment in the AT (athletic training) room, I was told by our head AT at the time that I had to stop coming in because eventually there is diminishing return”.
After his sophomore season Therrien realized that due to his injury he had to move on from playing football. However, he didn’t let this obstacle keep him from contributing to the program.
“I helped out the team in 2019 as a student assistant coach after I had to stop playing because of my surgery…I helped out recruiting, breaking down film and with equipment”.
Therrien decided the camaraderie that football offers was something he had to be a part of for the rest of his life. After graduating from UNE in 2021, he went on to become the team’s defensive line coach that same year.
“Seeing a player struggle at first, then teaching him technique and seeing them utilize it. Or when someone scores a touchdown and everyone is celebrating with them…That’s the best”.
Currently, Therrien is in his third year as the tight ends Coach for the UNE football team. Helping contribute to a record-breaking 8-2 season. From witnessing the program’s lowest and now highest achievements, certain things have stuck with Therrien.
“Be patient and trust in the process… don’t get too wrapped up in the result because everyone wants to win and be a champion. It’s not the destination or the journey, its about the company”.
Therrien and the UNE Football team look to take the next step to earning a bowl game next season after narrowly missing out. Ultimately, Therrien knows this game is about more than the wins and losses.
“Seeing kids grow from an 18-year-old boy to a 21-year-old man and see them walk across the stage…hearing them say how much they have grown from this program is a really special feeling”.
Reflection – Peer Review Experience
My experience with our peer review time on the profile project was very positive. It helped me a lot to get new eyes on my profile to catch small grammar errors, as well as what wasn’t working. The biggest thing I got out of the peer review was that I need to add a little bit more of my own voice to guide the profile. I tried to keep the “I” voice as absent as I could but it ended up being a little too absent. Adding some more of my own writing to help the quotes tell the story reshaped my profile a lot I believe. I also enjoyed reading my partners’ profiles to see their unique styles of approaching their profiles. I thought Greta’s profile was interesting because she had a section that was the question she asked, followed by a long quote. This dialogue style is something I want to try for the next profile I write.

Being a part of a brand new football program takes incredible patience, as it can take years before the team develops a reputation for being competitive. The patience pays off when you are able to witness milestone events for the team
Therrien was present for the team first-ever win against Curry College. Knowing he helped contribute to a major program first is something Therrien holds close.
“We won on a last second field goal and then all ran out to the field and partied…Being in the locker room after that win was awesome, guys were blasting music and dancing”
Each milestone marked another step taken to the top by the UNE football team. Unfortunately, wasn’t able to contribute as a player to future milestones after a back injury that would require surgery.
“It was tough to be on the sideline, when I see guys putting in their full effort it makes me want to give my full effort too. I realized I had to do whatever I can to get on the field again” said Therrien. “I spent every waking moment in the AT (athletic training) room…I was told by our head AT at the time that I had to stop coming in because eventually there is diminishing return”.

A testament to Therrien’s dedication to helping players grow is senior tight end, Jon Terry. Therrien has coached Terry at the position for three years, giving him the tools to earn first team all conference honors.
“Coach Trev is someone who is always bringing the energy no matter what day it is” says Terry. “He is always looking for ways to help his players improve, as well as ways he can improve himself as a coach. It has been fun to see how we have both progressed over the years”.
Therrien and the UNE Football team look to take the next step to earning a bowl game next season after narrowly missing out in 2025. Ultimately, Therrien knows this game is about more than the wins and losses.
